Live to Work

Live to Work or Work to Live?

That proverbial question. It can drum up all kinds of deep, Friday night beer drinking, BBQ'in, back deck conversations. Which do you do today and which would you like to do? Many of us may reply "I work to live... but I'd really like to Live to Work... because I spend so much time doing it already.." I'd like to believe the "Live to Work" option is available to each of us... we just need the knowledge, time, abilities, and patience to put it together and make it true for ourselves. So here are a few key thoughts in making this a reality and some social media posts to come this week to add to the idea.

1. We were made to work
According to the Bible, God was working when He created the Earth:
"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work." Genesis 2:2    And He created Adam (man) to work it: "The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." Genesis 2:15 NIV
As we see these passages, we can take away that Work is Good and Man was created to work. Conversely, man was not created to relax in or consume all God had made. The first thing God gave him to do was work in what God had created. So know that we are aligned with God's plans for us when we are working and taking care of all that God has provided for us (which includes land, animals, people, the planet, etc...)

2.  You were Created with Unique Gifts that can be Shared through Work
Do you know what your unique gifts are? Do you share them with others on a regular basis? I know these questions are often hard for me to answer off-the-cuff... but if I sit a while and take pen to paper, I can probably write down two or three things I do uniquely. When's the last time you took to jot down your own?

Knowing these things about ourselves and then putting ourselves in positions to share them with others can be extremely gratifying and purposeful in defining Why we do our work. In fact, it's perhaps the single most important thing we can define for ourselves and the one positive thing to focus on each day we go to work. So take some time to evaluate these things for yourself and refer to a few tips from the inter-webs.

3. We are in an Age of Abundance
In this post-recession job-market with millions of new jobs added monthly, budding start-ups (albeit down since 1980 on a macro-scale), and a growing freelance trend, there is an abundant amount of opportunities available to make your Work-life more enticing and enjoyable. Where it may feel like an impossible task to make a switch from where you are today, perhaps that next opportunity is closer than you think.

So finding purpose in your work is what you were meant to do and in fact, the primary way to find fulfillment and happiness in your work. It's worth the effort and in fact, critical to long-term happy work and life success. #WorkHappy #ChooseGreatWork
